Constancy, thy name is Springsteen. I mean, for real — at this point, the man is more than just the sum of his over two dozen records. He’s an icon; one of those rare threads that can effectively bind half a century’s worth of dismal and disparate musical/socio-economic American history with the unlikely image of a red ballcap stuffed into some blue Levi’s, summing up the Ginsburgian “howl” of the anguished American youth ably for paleontologists of future (…)

I love Eluvium. If I had the space, this article would just read “I love Eluvium” over and over. Talk Amongt the Trees (TMT Review) might be my favorite ambient work, EVER, but quality does not drop to anything below great on any of his works.
So this little nugget of news is especially titillating to yours truly, as it has been announced that pretty much every piece of music Eluvium has ever put out will be released in a very special seven-disc set. Aptly named Life Through (…)

Shortly before the wonderful world of mashups, groups like New Jersey’s Dälek were really doing mashups. That is to say that Dälek’s previous effects, such as 2005’s doom-saturated brain-burner Absence, mashed disparate genres such as shoegaze, noise, and hip-hop into something entirely new, something that didn’t quite fall in to both the aforementioned classifications or the contemporary definition of a mashup. Indeed, Dälek remain one of the most diverse hip-hop collectives in existence, (…)

Quite obviously in an effort to double his chances at making TMT’s Year-End List (his third LP collaborating with Orb/Killing Joke’s Youth as The Fireman also drops this week), the deliciously hammy Sir Paul McCartney has recently confirmed the existence of the legendary ‘lost’ Beatles freestyle/psych/noise track, “Carnival of Light” in an interview with BBC Radio 4. Cleverly side-stepping the abundant lameness of the song’s title, McCartney went (…)

For the past two Decembers, The Wu-Tang Clan’s high-pitched utility man Ghostface Killah has released new records, starting with the immaculate Fishscale (TMT Review) in 2006 and 2007’s dope-to-the-bone The Big Doe Rehab (TMT Review). HOLD UP, wait a damn minute here! We only gave Fishscale three blue orbs? Damn, Gumshoe, you are cold blooded! Once my hangover wears off and I strap on some reading pants, I’ma gonna peruse this thousand-word treatise on why Fishscale (…)

In 2005, Antony and the Johnsons released I Am A Bird Now (TMT Review), one of the most crushing epics to come out of the new millennium.

Following the Mercury Prize-winning Bird, Antony is set to please audiences once again. Critics agree: Antony and the Johnsons have something special going here. The Los Angeles Times reports, (…)

Hey, girls, you can stop making food in the kitchen and washing clothes now — boys, stop playing with your nuts: Bonnie “Prince” Billy is back on the attack! On March 17, Drag City will release a brand new album, Beware, which is being described as his “most ambitious” by his publicist. In fact, the press release is all kinds of colorful:
“It blooms in low light and cold but thrives in the sun as well, showing enticing spots and eating small creatures as they wander into its jaws.” (…)

Recession? What recession?! No one told Big Boi about any “recession,” that’s for sure! In fact, 2009 promises to be the most profitable year for he and his partner-in-exile, as the two Outkast hit-and-skit makers promise not only a pair of solo efforts, but, low and behold, another proper Outkast release to, you know, tie it all together. Three albums in early ‘09? Now that’s an economic bail-out plan we can all get behind!
“The South got something to (…)

Dylan Carlson, mastermind of drone demigods Earth and hero to that weird guy in your Russian Civ class who wears a hooded cloak on chilly days, ain’t afraid to pull a sacrilege or two for the sake of his art. Like his heroes Black Sabbath before him, Carlson loves sticking it to the Christian ascendancy, filling their nightmares with scores of Beelzebubs thrashing baby Jesus with skyscraper-sized hell guitars. Unfortunately, the moral majority has no idea who Dylan Carlson is and (…)

A friend of mine once wrote that his first experience seeing Six Organs of Admittance live caused him to believe in things that were obviously untrue. He was convinced, for example, his apartment had a fourth dimension, and he was ready to take a hammer to the bathroom to discover it. This only scratches the surface concerning the mystical power of Six Organs’ incandescent, Eastern-tinged, enveloping psychedelic modal noodling. It’s barely conceivable what some would do to grip the rarest (…)

Finally, a date for the upcoming Telepathe full-length! Their most recent EP, Chrome’s On It, was released this October through IAMSOUND and featured remixes by the indie dance elect, including Mad Decent, Free Blood (ex-!!!), The Mae Shi, Bobby Evans (Brother Reade), and Frankmusik. They’ve been on the road with Diplo, Abe Vigoda, and Boy 8-Bit — a tour that I’m sure history will look back on as one of the fall’s most bangin’-est, and probably the only tour of 2008 to prominently feature (…)

The original Punk Rock Karaoke is a touring cast of musicians from some very notable punk bands playing your favorites, allowing common folk, as well as some famous names, to take the stage and sing a ditty or two. These performances are recorded in the new Punk Rock Karaoke documentary, which was released this week via MVD. Better yet, each song features the words at the bottom of the screen so you can follow along at home! This is great news for me — I’m tired of singing the same three (…)

For now, 2009 seems to be looking up for hip-hop heads. The man himself, mighty Mos Def, is set to release his fourth studio LP, The Ecstatic, February 10 via Downtown Records. The Brooklyn-based rapper’s last album, 2006’s Tru3 Magic (TMT Review), was a critical success, but a commercial failure, only selling 93,000 copies. (This was partly due to poor promotion by his previous label, Geffen Records.)
If the hype is right, The Ecstatic is set to be a hip-hop heavyweight, (…)

Oh, bloody hell! Lily Allen, everyone’s favorite Jager-swilling British songstress and “Queen of MySpace,” is back with a follow-up to her 2007 debut, Alright, Still. Its title? It’s Not Me, It’s You. How subtle, Lily! Recorded at Eagle Rock Studios in LA with producer Greg Kurstin of The Bird and the Bee, the album is due for release February 10 on Capitol Records.
According to Rolling Stone (via the press release), “Highlights include ‘Everyone’s at (…)

French electronic artists Justice are simultaneously breaking into the world of puns and live DVD releases. In an effort to capture the essence of the band’s live experience, director friends Romain Gavras and So-Me taped the band nearly non-stop during its three-week tour of the U.S. in March 2008. A documentary of the edited footage is set to be released December 9 under the name A Cross the Universe (har).
Justice are best known for their bass-slapping, sample-happy tunes, as well as (…)
