The Believer's current issue, July/August 2008, revisits an annual theme for the hip lit mag: music. In accordance with tradition, this year's music issue of The Believer comes with a free CD of tunes relating to the issue's contents. However, unlike previous music issues of The Believer, the 2008 edition strays further outside the bounds of post-Shins indie rock than ever before, and its attached CD reflects that.
The subject of The Believer's 2008 music issue is the inspiration of non-Western musical styles on Western artists and the amalgamation of multiple musical traditions. Included on the corresponding compilation are tracks from Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Beat Konducta (aka Madlib), High Places, Gang Gang Dance, Aceyalone, Lucky Dragons, and Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities.
Believer interviews editor Ross Simonini curated the compilation.
The issue itself includes interviews with Ian MacKaye, Irma Thomas, and Alan Bishop, a feature on Gil Scott-Heron, advice from Canadian musicians including Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy and Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara, and a piece titled "A Brief Oral History of U.S. Black Metal".
